Frank Colonghi

Frank Colonghi, of Portland, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026, surrounded by the family who loved him deeply.Born April 21, 1951, in Middletown, Connecticut, Frank was raised in a close-knit Italian family where faith, family, hard work, good food, and laughter were central. His parents, Frances and Joe, and his grandmother Rose were especially important influences, along with many close extended family relationships.Frank attended Xavier High School in Middletown and St. Michael's College in Vermont. He built a successful 40-year career in the construction industry, earning respect for his skill, work ethic, and the strong relationships he formed. His crews often referred to one another as "brother."Frank lived life fully and with enthusiasm. He enjoyed running, cycling, skiing, hunting, fishing, and boating, and was an accomplished barefoot water skier. His adventurous spirit led him to scuba diving, where he became a certified divemaster and explored shipwrecks. He spent many cherished days on the water, including frequent trips to Block Island, tropical islands, and Rhode Island beaches where lasting memories were made with friends and family.He was larger than life, with an unforgettable smile and a great sense of humor. Frank loved to laugh and bring joy to others. He was also an excellent cook, and some of his happiest moments were spent around the table with family and friends.Above all, Frank loved his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife and soulmate, Jan, and a loving father to his son, Zach, and daughter, Francesca Bruzzese, and her husband, Dante Bruzzese. He was a proud and loving "Poppy" to his grandson, Rocco. He also shared a special bond with his mother-in-law, Jeanne Schmidt, and was joyfully awaiting the birth of his grandson, Giulio Frank, who will carry his name.Frank's faith in God was a source of strength throughout his life, especially after his diagnosis of glioblastoma in 2015. He faced his illness with remarkable courage and without complaint, supported by the devoted care of his wife and son so he could remain at home surrounded by love.He will be remembered for his courage, humor, generosity, adventurous spirit, and deep devotion to his family. His life leaves behind countless stories, laughter, and a lasting legacy of love carried on through his children and grandchildren. Now, after a long and courageous journey, Frank is at peace in the loving care of the God in whom he placed his faith. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday at 11:00 at St. Sebastian Church with interment in the Swedish Cemetery, Portland.
