Obituary

Joan (DeBenedetto) Mazzotta died peacefully on February 9 in hospice at Middlesex Hospital, surrounded by family. She was born on June 18, 1933 in Hartford, CT, and grew up in Hartford, Bloomfield, and Wethersfield, daughter of the late Anthony and Agatha (Composto) DeBenedetto. Joan graduated from Syracuse University in 1954 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design. After graduation, she worked as an architectural assistant and designer. She later had her own design business, worked as a travel agent, and was co-owner of 2 businesses on Main Street Middletown: Windsun and Wood, an energy store she owned with Pat and Tom Steger during the 1980's energy crisis; and a Benetton clothing store that she owned with her son Robert.
She is survived by her husband Carmelo (Carl) Mazzotta of Middletown; her daughter Marisa Mazzotta and son-in-law John Repoza of Charlestown, RI; her son Robert Mazzotta of Middletown; 3 grandchildren, Juliana, Frederick, and Carmelo Mazzotta of Darien, CT; and 5 nieces and 3 nephews. She is predeceased by her brother Frederick DeBenedetto and her sister Dolores Siegel. Her brother Frederick was killed in Germany in 1945, age 19, and was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism. Joan and Carl visited his grave in Margraten in the Netherlands on one of their many trips to Europe.
Joan and Carl married on February 5, 1955 and settled in Middletown, where Joan was active in many community organizations. She was a president of Junior Matinees, a president of Rockfall Corporation, a founder and president of the Wesleyan Potters, on the board of Russell Library, and a member of the Middletown Arts Commission and the Middletown Garden Club. She loved to cook, and was an accomplished artist, potter, and gardener. Her Japanese garden is registered with the Smithsonian. She was a member of the Archaeological Society of New Mexico, where she and Carl worked on a dig.
Joan and Carl traveled extensively , including many trips to Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, and Columbia, and trips to Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Cameroon, Europe, and many places in the United States.
Calling hours will be held Monday, February 13, 5-8 pm at D'Angelo Funeral Home, 22 South Main St., Middletown. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 am, Tuesday February 14 at St. Sebastian's Church, Washington St., Middletown. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to St. Sebastian's Church, Washington St., Middletown.
