Obituary

oseph James Zawisza
Joseph James "Jimmy" Zawisza, husband of Josephine M. (Mangiameli) Zawisza passed away Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Middlesex Health. He was born March 22, 1930 in Middletown, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Ann (Grzych) Zawisza. Jimmy was married for 67 years to Josephine and had three daughters. He worked as an inspector at Pratt & Whitney for 25 years and as a rubber molder at EIS before that.
Jimmy "Kubie" spent his childhood years growing up on Front Street in Middletown, a place that always held a warm place in his heart. In his life he was drawn to the ocean and the woods. He loved travel, especially trips to Cape Cod, the Berkshires, Canada, Fishers Island and Nova Scotia. He hiked these regions extensively as a young man through Boy Scouts as a life scout and by himself. He had a passion for his Sunday drives, frequently ending up in East Haddam or the Portland Quarry looking for pussy willows and mica. He loved reading and learning and had an extensive knowledge of history and current events, even keeping current through every means available after losing his vision. He enjoyed following the stock market, especially the advice of Jim Cramer of Mad Money. He loved and was immensely proud of his grandchildren. He spent many happy hours babysitting DJ and introducing him to his love of water and Uncle Squeek's Diner. He also loved painting and completed several pieces of artwork.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Cleverly and her husband John of Lincolnville, ME, his daughter Mary Jo Logan and her husband David of Glastonbury, CT, and his daughter Gloria DePatie and her husband Bill of Hopkinton, MA; his grandson David "DJ" Logan, his granddaughters Jessica and Jennifer DePatie and his grandson, Nicholas DePatie; his sister Patricia McGowan of Sterling, VA; sisters-in-law Ida Zawisa of Middletown, Marita Zawisa of Columbus, OH and Christine Zawisa of Middletown; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Frank, Stanley, Casmir and Walter Zawisa, John and Henry Zawisza; and sisters Anna Kendrek, Catherine Kurek, Agnes Gadzinski and Regina Ortisi.
The Zawisza family would like to extend sincerest thanks to Dr. Williams, Dr. Bishop, Dr, Haglund and the nurses and caregivers of IMCU, South 5 and especially South 7 of Middlesex Health.
The wake will be held Wednesday, August 23rd from 10-11:30 at the D'Angelo Funeral Home in Middletown followed by a mass at St. Sebastian's Church in Middletown at 12:00. A graveside service will be held immediately thereafter at St. Sebastian's Cemetery in Middlefield. Those who wish may send memorial donations to St. Sebastian's Church or to the charity of their choice in Jimmy's memory.
